Sanhati Project: Establishing a Community Safety Net Against Human Trafficking

Initiated in 2018 and ongoing, the Sanhati Project by Barasat Unnayan Prostuti (BUP) aims to establish a safety net within the community to combat the rising issue of human trafficking, with a particular focus on protecting adolescent girls. With human trafficking persisting across all Development Blocks of North 24 Parganas, our intervention zeroes in on Amdanga and Gaighata Blocks. Initially, we targeted two highly vulnerable Panchayats, Beraberia and Sutia, for intervention, and subsequently expanded our efforts to include two more vulnerable Panchayats, Bodai and Shimulpur.

Programme Coverage:

  • This intervention covers 36 revenue villages under Beraberia & Bodai Gram Panchayat of Amdanga Block and Sutia & Shimulpur Gram Panchayat of Gaighata Block.
  • The wider coverage of the project has reached out to more than 1,25,000 populations across the four Panchayats.

Target Population: At present, our project has directly impacted 1,766 individuals. Moreover, our indirect reach extends to over 94,000 people. Here is the breakdown of the individuals directly benefited by our interventions:

The Sanhati Project's comprehensive approach encompasses community mobilization, awareness campaigns, and targeted interventions to prevent human trafficking and protect vulnerable populations. Through our concerted efforts, we aim to create a safer environment for all, where individuals are empowered to recognize and combat the threat of trafficking, ensuring the well-being and security of our communities.
